A color mosaic from NASA's Viking orbiters, the missions that gave us our first detailed color portrait of Mars in the late 1970s. The red comes from iron oxide — the planet is literally rusty.
Fold it and find Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano in the solar system, and Valles Marineris, a canyon system as long as the continental United States.
